How it works
Local rules
In our review we did not find a City of Austin rule aimed at decorative lights on single-family homes. Austin's lighting standards in the Land Development Code mostly govern commercial and multifamily site work. Rules can still come from your HOA, deed restrictions or a historic district.
If your home is a designated landmark or sits in a local historic district, exterior changes can need review by the city's Historic Preservation Office first. Call them before you book, because we can't make that determination for you.

This is a plain-language summary of public documents as of Oct 11, 2026. It isn't legal advice, and Starie's makes no promise about compliance. Rules change, so confirm the current requirements with the city before you install.
Many Austin subdivisions, Avery Ranch in northwest Austin among them, have HOA design guidelines. Get your HOA's written okay before installation if your covenants ask for it.

Local notes
Austin's best-known holiday tradition sets up in Zilker Park every December. The organizer's 2026 listing shows the walk open Dec 10-23. Lots of families who visit want their own roofline to carry the same red-and-green look at home through New Year's.

Neighbors around W. 37th St. have put up a volunteer-run display for decades. It's a good reminder that Austin likes its lights a little weird and very personal, which suits a system that can hold any color you choose.

Pixel Dancer app
Pixel Dancer doesn't offer custom zones or control of individual lights. The whole run changes together.
FAQ
We didn't find a city rule written specifically for decorative lights on single-family homes. Permits and reviews can still apply to electrical work, historic properties or HOA communities, so confirm with the City of Austin and your HOA before you install.
Yes. Pixel Dancer can mix millions of colors and save the look as a favorite, so you can bring the same palette back each December.
